The 2026 Legal Requirements

Since the major updates in September 2025, the rules for nurseries and childminders have tightened.

  • The 12-Hour Rule: To count in staff-to-child ratios, staff must have the Full 12-hour Paediatric First Aid (Level 3) certificate.

  • The 3-Month Window: All newly qualified Level 2 and 3 staff must earn their PFA certificate within 3 months of starting work.

  • Mandatory Presence: At least one person with the full 12-hour qualification must be on the premises at all times when children are present (and on all outings).

Requirements

  • The Test papers are in English
  • You will be required to do CPR on the floor
  • You will be required to complete the 2 day course
  • Advanced notice may be given for special requirements on test papers. ie: Large print
1.1 Identify and Roles and Responsibilities of a Paediatric First Aider
1.2 Identify how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
1.3 Differentiate between an infant and a child for the purposes of First Aid treatment
2.1 Conduct a scene survey
2.2 Conduct a primary survey on an infant and a child
2.3 Summon appropiate assistance when necessary
3.1 Identify when to administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) to an infant manakin and a child manikin
3.2 Demonstrate CPR using an infant manakin and a child manikin
3.3 Identify when to place an infant or child into the recovery position
3.4 Demonstrate how to place an infant into the recovery position and a child into the recovery position
3.5 Demonstrate continual monitering of breathing whilst they are in the recovery position, for an infant and a child
3.6 Identify how to administer First Aid to an infant or a child who is experiencing a Seizure
4.1 Identify when an infant or a child is choking
4.2 Demonstrate how to administer First Aid to an infant and a child who is choking
5.1 Identify whether external bleeding is life-threatening
5.2 Demonstrate how to administer First Aid to an infant or a child with external bleeding
6.1 Recognise when an infant of a child is suffering from Shock
6.2 Identify how to administer First Aid to an infant or a child who is suffering from Shock
7.1 Identify how to administer First Aid to an infant or a child: Bite, Stings, Small cuts, Grazes, Bumps and Bruises, Small Splinters and Nosebleeds

Demonstrate how to control Catastrophic Bleeding
1.1 Recognise a suspected Fracture, dislocation, sprain or strain

3.1 Identify how to administer First Aid for an infant or a child with a foreign body in their eye, ear or nose

4.1 Recognise suspected Diabetic Hypoglycaemic emergency, Asthma attack, Meningitis and Febrile convulsions
4.2 Identify how to administer First Aid for an infant or a child who is suspected to be suffering from Diabetic Hypoglycaemic emergency, Asthma attack, Meningtiis or Febrile convulsions
5.1 Recognise when an infant or a child is suffering from extreme cold and extreme heat
5.2 How to adminsiter First Aid for an infant or a child who is suffering from extreme cold or extreme heat
6.1 Identify how to safely manage and incident involving electricity
7.1 Identify how to recognise the severity of the burns or scalds
7.2 Identify how to administer First Aid for an infant or a child with burns and scalds
8.1 Identify how poisonous substances can enter the body
8.2 Identify how to administer First Aid for an infant or child with suspected sudden poisoning
4.1 Recognise suspected allergic reaction
4.2 Identify how to adminsiter First Aid for an infant or a child who is suspected to be suffering from an allergic reaction
9.1 Recognise suspected Anaphylaxis in an infant or child
9.2 Identify how to administer First Aid for an infant or child with suspected Anaphylaxis
9.3 Demonstrate the use of a training device adrenaline auto-injector
